Effects of Pediatric Crohn’s

Crohn’s disease can affect children physically, socially, and emotionally. Physical manifestations of pediatric Crohn’s disease often include growth problems as well as typical Crohn’s symptoms, such as frequent diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fatigue.

The social impact of Crohn’s on children is also connected to symptoms in that children feel inhibited by them. In addition, pediatric Crohn’s patients tend to be smaller than other kids. As a result, children often become introverted or socially awkward. They may have trouble concentrating at school or tend not to participate in sports or group activities, both of which are essential to social development and an overall feeling of self-esteem.

Children may also suffer emotionally because of this sense of alienation, along with the feeling of being a burden to the family. They may not be able (or not wish) to discuss their condition with others, which makes them feel even more alone.

Good nutrition, exercise, effective treatment, and communication with your child and his or her doctor, teachers, and other family members can help limit the effects of the disease as well as help with symptom control.
