For Kids with Crohn’s Disease

So you went to the doctor and had a bunch of tests. Then the doctor said you have something called Crohn’s disease.

Well, what is that, anyway?

Crohn’s disease is a condition that affects your lower intestines or colon. The disease causes parts of your colon to become inflamed and irritated. When that happens you may feel sick, usually in the area just below your stomach called the abdomen.

Sometimes along with the pain you may need to go to the bathroom and have a bowel movement. Usually this bowel movement is very soft and liquidy and is referred to as diarrhea. In fact, you may have to go to the bathroom a lot. This can sometimes get in the way of activities or schoolwork, but there are treatments available for Crohn’s disease so you can deal with your symptoms and still live your life. Most kids with Crohn’s disease grow up to be healthy and active adults. But it is important to listen to your parents and your doctor about how to take care of your body, take your medication and eat right.

Also, Crohn’s disease is not contagious. Nobody in your family can “catch” it from you and neither can your friends.
